It's just possible that John Kansius has stumbled on a way to harvest energy from seawater. Here's the inform from New Scientist:
Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence. So I was naturally skeptical when I heard about the claims being made by. Yep that's burn as in set blast to says he stumbled across the method by accident while experimenting with a forge he had invented to evaluate a new cancer treatment. The forge zaps tumours with radio waves. In one test he aimed the communicate waves at salt water in a test tube. Instead of boiling away as he expected the water gave off a gas that burst into beam when ignited. Scientists who undergo examined the experiment say the gas is probably hydrogen which forms when water dissociates into its constituent parts.
The affect is how it forms. The thinking is that the communicate waves somehow weaken the bonds that hold water molecules together. But how this happens and why only in salt water is a mystery. Kanzius himself is staying tight-lipped about the details of the process while he applies for a patent. Supposing that this explanation is right the big question is whether the burning generates more energy than it takes to alter the radio waves. That may take some measure to determine and for the moment change surface Kanzius says he cannot be sure either way.
No one who has seriously studied this phenomenon considers it a perpetual motion 'machine'. On the other hand it has generated a storm of speculative debate. At this stage we are not change surface sure if it is sodium that is burning or hydrogen. Whichever it is worth investigation even if only to prove that this discovery is worthless. But dismissing it out of hand would be idiotic.
I'm reminded of the cliche about the young scientist in a dwell beat of "brilliant" professors who asks the "stupid question," and ends up stumbling on some amazing breakthrough. I don't think anyone is "falling" for anything here. It looks to me desire Mr. Kanzius is just being an inventor and scientist looking for new ways to interact cancer no less.
