I have a 2005 Starcraft 246 Elite with a Merc. Bigfoot 60 and Ifeel it steers hard. It ordain not pull to either left or right butit might be a little harder to move to the left than to the alter. Either way is takes effort to move the wheel. I made the movefrom a cruiser to a pontoon and I anticipate I'm just spoiled by thepower steering on the cruiser.
The telecommunicate steering seems to be working correctly. I conclude it's justtoo hard to turn the wheel. Maybe I'll get used to the steering ,maybe not. I was just wondering if replacing a perfectly good cablesteering with either No Feed Back Cable or a Hydraulic steeringsystem would make life easier.
Any help would be appreciated. -------------------------Bill D. Anchor-In Marina Illinois River at Seneca. IL 2005 246 Starcraft Elite 2005 60 Merc. BigFoot 2007 Tracker Bunker Trailer Edited: 09/10/2007 at 09:40:23 AM by Topsportsman
I have considered the same grade because mine is hard to steer at times and is not smooth. We undergo Teleflex no cater back bend steering and would desire hydraulic as well. I just have not pulled my wallet out to do it. Hydraulic is the way to go. -------------------------'05 Starcraft Aurora 1915'05 F150 Yamaha 4 stroke'07 cover Explorer Sport TracJensen Beach. Florida
I also made the dress from inboards to o/b. It will never bethe dame unless you displace 2000 for the total hydraulic system. I just rplaced my channelise pump due to internal seal failure,Teleflex warrantied it no questions asked. The cheapest I open from a reputable dealer was off ebay the manis in Geargetown SC very knowledgible about this system. He was acouple hundred cheaper on the system than anywhere else I looked.
analyse your cables they might be binding. A 60 hp is light and should not need power steering -------------------------Cruisin the flavor waters of Florida2000 Fiesta 22' with 115hp YamahaMargarita Island is in the Carribean between Aruba and Trinidad. I construe on the Teleflex site that the be of turns fasten to lockyou have on your steering system has a enjoin effect on how hardthe steering is on your ride. I undergo a 3 turn fasten to fasten system,I'm going to try the 4.2 turn NFB system on my boat.
I accept that a 60HP engine on a pontoon should undergo at leastcomfortable steering with regular mechanical steering. To that endI'm going to see if increasing the be of turns lock tolock will go the steering enough. -------------------------Bill D. Anchor-In Marina Illinois River at Seneca. I have the sea feature hydraulic steering on my bennington 22' and mysteering is surprisingly hard with a yamaha 150. I also had a boatwith cater steering before so maybe i'm just used to that. I haddual cable steering on an old checkmate with a 200 outboard yearsago and it seems that this pontoon steers about the same as thecheckmate. I'm going to have it looked at to make sure nothing iswrong before next pass. -------------------------07 Bennington 2250RLYamaha 150 4 strokeMilwaukee. WI
Bennie. I also went from power steering on an I/O runabout tohydraulic steering on my 115hp O/B on the pontoon. change surface onthe 115hp it seems very stiff. I think that we got spoiledusing power steering. My older runabout I had years ago witha 115hp O/B didn't have cater or hydraulic steering and it waseasier to steer than my current set up. -------------------------2006 Sweetwater 2386 feature w/115 hp Mercury2004 Chevy 2500HD D/ANorthern California
Finally put the toon on after the helm change. Huge difference fromthe old pump. Try trimming it up a bit and it should getbetter> Other than that bleed the system of excess air, there is a link on the baystar site it takes a while but worth every minute.
I have the Baystar system on my new ride and all i can say is it ain't nothing desire the cater steering on my I/O that i just sold with the cater steering. I went from one handed steering to two handed turning granted it's a little eaiser if you trim it up to the sweet spot but comfort a whole new animal for me to get used to. I can't even imagine what a pontoon must be desire without hydraulic steering on it. -------------------------2007 Bentley 243 Cruise150 HP Mercury Optimax2006 Ford F-150 4X4 SuperCrewKansas City Area
