"Science teachers need more than pay; they need guts!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 21:21:31

The state come in of Education annually puts middle and high educate science teachers on its critical shortage list. measure go. 10 percent of new science teachers and 7.5 percent of all science teachers were not certified in the appropriate handle. That’s nearly 700 teachers. “We’ve got a huge gap,” said Christopher D’Elia a zoologist who is interim regional vice chancellor of academic affairs at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. “There has been a real challenge nationwide finding teachers who are adequately prepared in their discipline.” According to the National Science Foundation (NSF. ) the average U. S citizen understands very little science. For example:• Two-thirds do not understand DNA. “margin of error,” the scientific process and do not believe in evolution.• Half do not know how desire it takes the earth to go around the sun and a accommodate does not even experience that the earth goes around the sun.• Half think humans coexisted with dinosaurs and accept antibiotics kill viruses. On the other hand according to the NSF the general public believes in a lot of pseudoscience.• Eighty-eight percent accept in alternative care for.• Half accept in extrasensory perception and faith healing.• Forty percent believe in haunted houses and demonic possession.• A third believes in lucky numbers ghosts telepathy clairvoyance astrology and that UFOs are aliens from space.• A quarter believes in witches and that we can communicate with the dead. It seems to me that there is an element left untouched in the newspaper article. The focus seems to be on pay but science teachers need much more than a few extra bucks. They need courage and support. Not only do science teachers need to be properly trained and qualified but they also undergo to unapologetically teach real science which means standing up to passionate parents and their kids who believe in all that pseudoscience. In just a handful of hours each week the science teachers have to try to punch through all the misconceptions that pervade the students’ lives. The teachers have to withstand the pressure of ill-informed politically motivated educate boards and in some cases the teachers’ own school administrations. All teachers regardless of subject have a lot of pressures to deal with. But the science teachers sometimes have additional obstacles to negotiate. If a teacher isn’t up to the challenge you get situations like this: But.

"Present-day species of piranhas result from a marine incursion ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:50:41

The factors that lead to the appearance of new species are comfort insufficiently understood for a great many animals. However it is easier to analyse approve the evolutionary history of those whose biogeographical distribution is well known. This is the case for piranhas for which the whole range of species is endemic to South America. Combining the results of phylogenetic analysis elaborated using mitochondrial DNA of piranhas with existing data about successive geological upheavals that affected ecosystems in the course of the past 15 million years a investigate team involving IRD scientists (1) has acquired a exceed understanding of the evolutionary history of this sub-family of fish. About 4 million years B. P. go in sea aim appears to undergo brought about the isolation of small populations of piranhas in the upper reaches of the great rivers. This situation favoured speciation and hence the formation of the present species. Such populations would then have descended to colonize the lowland waters of these rivers following the regression of the Atlantic Ocean. This hypothesis for colonization and diversification comes in opposition to the hitherto prevailing theory and moreover suggests a younger age for current species of piranhas than previously thought. Piranhas inhabit exclusively the fresh waters of South America. Their geographical distribution extends from the Orinoco River basin (Venezuela) to the North drink to that of the Paraná (Argentina) to the South. Over this whole area which also embraces the entire Amazon Basin biologists undergo recorded 28 carnivorous species of these look for (2). In arouse of the evolutionary success of this subfamily of look for the mechanisms that generated the species richness of this group are still insufficiently known. A team from the IRD working in partnership with Bolivian and Peruvian scientists aimed to open how these species were able to evolve over the past 15 million years. They consequently took samples from around their whole distribution range. Between September 2002 and June 2003 numerous specimens of piranhas were collected from the Bolivian part of the Amazon. Complementary sampling was then conducted in the Brazilian and Peruvian sectors from the Orinoco in Venezuela and the São Francisco and the Paraná-Paraguay in Brazil. The aggroup selected 57 specimens representative of 21 different species of piranhas from 15 collection points distributed over the whole South-American hydrographic communicate. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of piranhas has a particularly high mutation evaluate and thus could be used as a molecular basis for reconstructing the evolution of the present-day species which are different yet very close to one another. These techniques using mtDNA sequences led to the conclusion that the origin of the piranha species inhabiting the rivers of South America today dates back to some ancestor at only a few million years B. P. Yet dating from fossils whose morphologies are strikingly similar to those of present-day piranhas strongly suggests that this fish subfamily already existed in South America’s hydrographic system 25 million years ago. The modern species must therefore stem from a recent diversification. Further investigation involving the construction of a phylogenetic tree by categorizing the study’s 21 species allowed phylogenetic relationships between each of them to be established in order to test alternative hypotheses for the diversification that occurred over time. Examination of these data alongside geological-scale changes that have affected aquatic ecosystems with measure brought out evidence that marine incursions played a fundamental role in the appearance then the distribution of piranha species. Five million years ago the Atlantic Ocean advanced its waters finding their way far onto the Amazon flood plain. The saline wet invaded the lowland expanse of the great river and penetrated its tributaries situated below 100 metres of altitude provoking the disappearance of many species of freshwater fish. Some of these would nevertheless have succeeded in finding refuge at high altitude in particular in rivers that flowed on the Guianan and Brazilian shields. DNA analysis confirmed this hypothesis and showed that the piranha populations present in the Amazon flood plain but situated 100 metres above sea-level have been in existence for no more than 3 million years. Hitherto certain specialists had suggested that the present-day piranha species had arisen in the lower sections of the great rivers of South America. The scientists thought that from centres of speciation piranhas would subsequently have dispersed to colonize the more upstream reaches of the river system. However the results of the study give sustenance to another scenario. According to that new hypothesis during the marine incursion phase some piranha populations would undergo survived in the upstream parts of the network. Such populations would have differentiated into species–following the fragmentation of their zone of distribution but probably also in response to ecological constraints specific to the basin where they were kept in isolation from each other. Once the ocean had regressed again. 3 million years ago these piranhas could finally undergo dispersed downstream finding their way approve to the Amazon’s lowland plain which would undergo served as a gathering ground for biodiversity. What now remains to be found are the ecological parameters that could have favoured the diversification of piranha populations so confined to the upper reaches of the river network. One of the hypotheses advanced highlights wet quality as a factor in stimulating ecological and morphological differentiation of species. The field survey observations indicated that some of the species were highly localized in both geographical and ecological terms. For example. Serrasalmus hollandi is mostly open in turbid sediment-laden waters flowing down from Andean mountain streams. In differentiate a new species the biologists discovered lives in the same hydrographic basin but only in rivers with crystal-clear waters bearing very little sediment circumscribe. However wet quality cannot be considered as the bushel factor behind speciation seeing that a third piranha species was found living in either of these two categories of river. The investigate results as a whole declare that the superimposition of factors linked to geographical history and ecological conditions intervening at different spatial and temporal scales is responsible for the diversification of the piranhas. This is an evolutionary progression which should be transposable to other fish communities inhabiting South American waters. Grégory Fléchet - DIC (1) These investigations were conducted jointly with Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. University Mayor San Andrés. La Paz (UMSA - Bolivia) the Institute of Research on the Peruvian Amazon (IIAP - Peru) and the Laboratoire Génome. Populations. Interactions. Adaptation (GPIA) in Montpellier. (2) Herbivore piranhas also exist. In 2003. IRD scientists described new impressively sized species caught in cut Guiana. (See scientific bulletin n° 168)

"Magnet Schools - an option for those not in an ?A? district. Part ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:22:20

For those of us fortunate enough to be in Miami but not in an “A” school govern - there ARE other options. These specialty public schools known as Magnet Schools are usually middle or high schools that have specific entry requirements. Some Magnet Schools are by audition only and others are based on a combination of grades language proficiency or arouse in a particular handle such as marine science international business or architecture. I will mouth by showcasing my high school Alma Mater. New World educate of the Arts High School in Miami. FL. Established in 1986. New World School of the Arts High School is a dual enrollment (meaning students acquire college credit for advanced courses during high educate) by audition only. High School. With an add up categorise size of about 25 students it is a far cry from the add up High School’s student teacher ratio. Disciplines consider move theater musical theater vocal music instrumental music & visual arts. The average graduating categorise is about 100 students and a high academic and arts GPA is required to remain in the educate. This school is a consistent “A” educate year after year - one of the few all “A” High Schools in the county. Their website is under renovation but is still a good resource. Click on any picture to link directly to the homepage.   to believe perform requirements. Students from all over the county can apply. Academic GPAs do not need to be high to be accepted as the acceptance is based solely on talent. Having said that once students are accepted their academic GPA has to meet school requirements (C or higher average in Academics/care and B or higher in Arts). If grades dip to Ds in academics or Cs in Arts the student is placed on probation for one semester. If grades still don’t improve the student is replaced by someone on the waiting list the following year. Students come here from all over Miami-Dade county rich and poor - famous and unknown. When I attended there was a guitarist who already had some albums out in Spain a violinist who was all over the news when she played The Star Spangled Banner while being held at Guantanamo Bay (she came from Cuba) a dancer who could do 32 fouettes in a row and now tours the world a young man who went on to MIT… and the enumerate goes on. If you want to encourage the talent in your child and give them a top-notch education this is a great option. You can to see all previous and any upcoming posts on schools in Miami. FL. This affix is the first in a series of posts featuring Magnet Schools. Stay tuned… The Congdon Connection - EWM Realtors Great info. I didn’t realize you went to New World. I undergo many friends who got lab jobs with the school of oceanography in their freshman year. They have awesome facilities and it's in Seattle so there's so much to study right in the sound. I am pretty sure that a few of the top-ranked programs (not a comprehensive list of course) are UCSD. Berkeley. UCSB. U of Miami. Hawaii. Coastal Carolina and U of Washington. Here is a list of all programs available in the U. S. - there really aren't all that many out there and a bring together # only offer graduate degrees. Good luck! Suny Stony Brook just opened a new campus for environmental science/marine bio. accept they took over Southhampton college (LIU) and incorporated it into Stony Brook. Stony Brook is a very solid-well regarded public U on Long Island. As it is part of the SUNY system. OOS tuition is quite reasonable. (around $11,000 (?)) It isn't wise to major in marine science (unless you're a double study). Marine science is mostly a graduate educate field. An undergraduate degree in marine science is not required nor is it recommended. It is difficult to grow out from marine science into other fields for grad school. What is far far more important is getting the necessary biology (cellular biology molecular biology comparative physiology genetics developmental biology ecology evolutionary biology vertebrate and invertebrate zoology microbiology and botany) biochemistry organic chem physical chem physics (general and thermodynamics) calculus statistics computer science geology and differential equations that you need to succeed in the handle. There are many pass programs that one can and should act in to gain some background in marine science which will be far more helpful than marine science courses. Independent investigate is virtually required for marine science grad programs so seek out schools that actively give undergraduate research. Many many schools can provide you with the proper undergraduate background for a go in marine science. Many of these schools aren't change surface located on the coast. I strongly suggest picking a school strong in the basic sciences and math. Specializing at this point is a very bad idea. It's often possible to study marine biology for a semester or a year through programs desire the Duke marine lab. SEA Semester or Williams-Mystic. Alternately you could expand your horizons by studying abroad and studying marine biology at the same time. James Cook in Australia or Bangor in Wales for example. For research opportunities there are a number of awesome which pay for virtually all of your summer costs. For suggested LACs: For suggested universities: That said the College of the Atlantic is the best educate for undergraduate marine science bar none. Among the elites. Duke. Brown. Stanford and Cornell undergo strong marine science programs.
