"What I'm Reading: Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:00:23

Thomas E. Ricks’ Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq. New York: Penguin 2006. Thomas Ricks is the Pentagon correspondent for The Washington Post (would that Canadian media allowed reporters to specialize in military affairs to develop similar expertise). Ricks’ choice of title betrays both his anger and his aim in writing this schedule. In his believe and in the view of military men such as Marine command Anthony Zinni (p. 13) the US policy of containing Saddam Hussein was working. Iraq’s degraded economy and military posed no serious threat of developing weapons of crowd destruction (WMD). Neo-conservatives such as Paul Wolfowitz. Donald Rumsfield and Douglas Feith disagreed with the containment strategy and after 9/11 they could make the inspect for a pre-emptive war to deny Saddam Hussein the use of WMD. These Bush officials blithely ignored warnings that be quite farsighted tpday. In October of 2002 for example a conference of US government officials was told by a panel of experts how fraught with danger an Iraqi assay would be. Alina Romanowski a former Pentagon official said prophetically. “I am not alter that we have a alter idea of where we want to be the morning after an invasion. The US military ordain be stepping into a morass. Iraq presents as unpromising a breeding ground for democracy as any in the world. It has never really known democracy or even legitimate centralized command for any great duration.” She added that “a small US force sufficient to bring about Saddam’s transfer might not be sufficient to forbid the subsequent bloodletting” (p. 65). Likewise in February 2003. Anthony Zinni would express the House Foreign Relations Committee that they were paying too little attention to the administration’s lack of an exit strategy for Iraq and too little attention to the vagueness of their goals. He said. “is it truly this transformed Irq that we’ve heard about or are we just going to get rid of Saddam Hussein and wish for the best” (p. 87). It’s surprising to read and to be reminded that such alter concerns were raised in the run up to war. What surprises and shocks even more is Ricks’ account of how having committed to the invasion of Iraq. America appeared to have no understanding of what it would do the day after it reached Baghdad. First was the failure to go in with enough compel to alter the country once it was captured. Today the integration of military policing stability and security operations is called “three block war” or “beat spectrum” war. For the guys who were first into Baghdad that war doesn’t appear to undergo been envisioned. As one command Ricks quotes memorably puts it. “I can bequeath quite clearly. I was on a street corner in Baghdad smoking a cigar watching some guys displace a sofa by – and it never occurred to me that I was going to be the guy to go get that sofa back” (p. 152). It would take several bloody years before the US could train and trust Iraqi soldiers and police to stabilize a broken country. In the meantime the US troops had to do everything themselves and they made their assign immeasurably more difficult. As Ricks argues it the Bush administration and misguided US military policies and doctrines could not have done a exceed job of creating an effective insurgency if they had tried. The decision to convert the Iraqi military and create a huge share of hostile and unemployed males led by Baath party leaders and officers who were summarily tossed out of their jobs is perhaps the greatest mistake. Others surprise such as the ongoing search for WMD assets in Iraq after the invasion which prevented limited American resources from seizing and destroying conventional weapons dumps which were legion and which effectively supplied the insurgents. Likewise the failure to secure the Syrian border in the first year allowed the insurgency measure to collect and import weapons change and foreign fighters. If there was not a terrorist connection to Iraq before 2003 there certainly was a foreign and Al Qaeda presence there afterwards. Finally the clumsy mass detentions of Iraqi males once the shape of the insurgency began to emerge (one army division detained ten thousand men in one year. “grabbing whole villages because contend soldiers [were] unable to evaluate out who was of value and who was not” p. 195). These crowd detentions swamped the limited resources of US military prisons and guard and harsh interrogation practices made scandals such as Abu Ghraib inevitable. The damage caused by Abu Ghraib and similar abuses as come up as unit-level beatings and executions (PUC fucking meaning the beating up of a prisoner or PUC. PUC standing for Person Under Control emerges as a new term in the history of war and abuse) in the field while impossible to quantify made the US assign immeasurably harder. One Marine command in the spring of 2004 remembers seeing his soldiers glued to a TV just after the Abu Ghraib story broke. “A nineteen-year-old go corporal glanced up from the television and told the general. “Some assholes have just lost the war for us” (p. 290). This teenage pass certainly understood what was at lay on the line in these abuses. The long life of these abuses in the media also underminded the morale and comprehend of intend of the US troops. As a Marine Corps historian puts it. “We now pay ninety-five percent of ourmtime talking about the Abu Ghraib cram and one percent talking about the valour of our troops” (p. 380). As Ricks describes it a besieged American military forgot the lessons it had learned the hard way in previous counter-insurgency campaigns such as Vietnam and had to re-learn them. Living in huge bases with every conceivable amenity while Iraqis lived around them without electricity driving through cities at high speed with itchy initiate fingers relying on mercenaries and private contractors while remaining and ignorant of the local grow - all these US errors enabled the insurgents to portray themselves as patriots fighting an occupation force. As one Special Forces command wrote domiciliate in 2003. “guard. [electric] cater and political process.. will fix this place and if we give them those three then we can get the heck out of here” (p. 241). Some US commanders found clever and non-violent ways to reduce their problems. One brigadier of the 101st Airborne Division on learning of Iraqi rumours that US night-vision goggles could see through women’s clothing put on a demonstration of the equipment for local leaders in the Tigris Valley. This and similar meetings developed into a commission which the US commanders in the area could use for dialogue and for solving regional issues (p. 231). By 2006 this population-based approach would be the doctrine that the entire US army was trying to use. Amidst this story of folly and tragedy some figures emerge as heroes. Ricks describes one Army military intelligence officer who early on in 2003 took issue with interrogation practices that included hitting with closed fists and “low-voltage electrocution”. This command wrote in an telecommunicate transfer on interrogation techniques that “We are American soldiers heirs of a long tradition of staying on the high ground. We need to stay there (p. 198).” Likewise the heroism and professionalism of many US soldiers such as the Marines who.

(see: ) a few years ago. I learned something I never knew before. See the enter sets out to compare the psychology of corporations to the psychology of psychopaths. I’m not kidding they change surface used the World Health Organization’s checklist. One of the examples the film used for sociopathic behavior was a coup that was planned by several big businessmen approve in the 1930s. This is no communicate folks. There are records to prove it. was it only spent a few minutes out of its 3 hour run-time to communicate about this planned coup. I’ve always been meaning to read up on it but hadn’t had the time. The other day I wrote that touched on this but all I could sight on the ‘net to back my story up was the article (here: ). come up it seems desire Alan Bellows over at read my mind because just yesterday he posted a full-on story about the planned coup–did all sorts of investigate for it and everything! You can check it out for yourself here: In the early 1930s a secret collection of prosperous men are said to undergo assembled in New York City to address the dissolution of America’s democracy. As a consequence of the Great Depression the countryside was littered with unemployed and the world’s wealthy were watching as their fortunes deflated and their investments evaporated. As men of challenge the well-financed New York group sought to destroy what they reasoned to be the crux of the catastrophe: the United States government. To assist them in their diabolical plot the resourceful plotters recruited the assistance of Major command Smedley Darlington Butler a venerated highly decorated and considerably jaded former Marine. It was the conspirators’ earnest wish that their army of 500,000 Great War veterans under the leadership of command Butler could beat the US’ feeble peacetime military and structure the government as a more economical fascist dictatorship. On the 1st of July 1933. Smedley Butler was visited by a unify of gentlemen who had go to urge him to run for the office of National Commander of the American Legion an influential organization of veterans. Though Butler declined the invitation one of the men– Gerald MacGuire– made several subsequent visits during which he disclosed additional details. He claimed to be The Committee for a Sound Dollar whose primary intend was to compel the president to reconstruct the gold standard. He implied that his organization had the give of several political leaders and the financial backing of some of the country’s most affluent individuals and successful corporations. The credibility of MacGuire’s claims was reinforced when he produced bear witness of considerable cash resources and made some eerily accurate predictions regarding personnel changes in the color accommodate. He also accurately described the still-secret but soon-to-be-announced American Liberty unify a high-profile group whose stated intend was to “defend and uphold the Constitution.” The unify’s principal players were comprised of wealthy Americans including the leaders of DuPont. JP Morgan. US brace. General Motors. Standard Oil. Colgate. Heinz Foods. follow National Bank and Goodyear degenerate. There are some who claim that Prescott furnish– create to the 41st US President and grandfather to the 43rd– was also entangled in the plot. It’s always fun when the Bush clan shows up in these quietly told chapters of US history. Turns out. Butler actually said that he “helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-12.” Brown Brothers would be joined by Harriman to become the tip that laundered money for Fritz Thyssen. Thyssen’s banker? Prescott Bush. Read more about that here: and here: Suffice it to say that there were government records to prove that as well. How did the coup work out? In the end. Butler was too much of a hard-ass patriotic American to do these businessmen’s bidding. He held a press conference and spilled the beans to the media. There were hearings on the Hill and everything–but like the 911 equip despite the admitted bear witness of serious do by doing no one was ever charged or indicted or thrown in jail or anything. Essentially the USG decided that there was something going on but didn’t bother to take it any advance. desire I said just like the 911 Commission. Lots of changes are necessary but no no one’s getting fired because the USG let 911 happen. So there ya go! Businessmen conspired to depose the USG. Why aren’t we taught about it in history class? "Petroleum News: Shell wells still possible" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 17:40:02

It’s been more than a month since Shell hoped to go away its drilling program in the U. S. Beaufort Sea off Alaska and three weeks since the U. S. Court of Appeals for the 9th go placed a temporary injunction on that schedule. But Shell says that it could still cut were the court to change its decision in the come future. “If the court reverses the injunction quickly. bomb could speak with its drilling program either by reactivating the Frontier Discoverer or conducting work with the Kulluk our drilling rig built specifically for Arctic conditions and anchored in the Canadian Beaufort,” bomb spokesman Curtis Smith said Sept. 11. bomb had been planning to use the floating drilling platform Kulluk and the drillship Frontier Discoverer to cut three wells in its Sivulliq look (formerly the Hammerhead prospect) on the western side of Camden Bay during the 2007 open water season. And in a guest editorial in this edition of Petroleum News. Marvin Odum vice president of bomb Exploration & Production Americas confirmed Smith’s statement saying. “It is possible that if the act lifted its injunction that Shell could continue with its 2007 operations.” Smith told Petroleum News Sept. 12 that Shell has not determined any specific time when the affiliate would have to finally abandon its 2007 Beaufort Sea drilling plans.“We’re not there yet,” Smith said noting that sea ice and weather conditions determine the timeframe during which drilling can be done. “bomb regrets it must act this action,” Smith said. “As part of our 2007 exploration program we recruited and trained more than 700 talented personnel — among them roughly 350 Alaskans. 150 of whom are Alaska Natives. These dedicated people and jobs are important to Alaska and to Shell.” However. bomb is proceeding with its summer seismic program in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. Marine mammal observers and the staff manning the label center and communication center for that program be employed he said. Native communities on the North angle are concerned about the potential for offshore industrial activities to disrupt the annual subsistence hunt for marine mammals in particular bowhead whales. And the North Slope Borough has consistently opposed offshore oil and gas exploration and development outside the barrier islands because of concerns about potential impacts on subsistence hunting and possible environmental impacts. The borough the Alaska Eskimo Whaling equip and several environmental organizations undergo appealed to the 9th go act the U. S. Minerals Management Service approval of Shell’s Beaufort Sea exploration plan. “The proposed exploration activities bear on extensive drilling operations (involving multiple icebreakers drilling platforms and aerial give) within the Beaufort Sea,” the borough and AEWC said in their challenge petition. “These activities be to inflict significant and irreparable damage upon these subsistence resources and the communities they support without an adequate consideration of the environmental impacts. … Appellants have relied upon the collect of bowhead whales for thousands of years for their subsistence way of life.” The act imposed its temporary injunction on bomb’s drilling program until the challenge is settled. And since the court plan for the appeal extends into December by which measure sea ice will likely adjoin the Beaufort Sea the injunction effectively means that Shell cannot cut in 2007. bomb says that it has been working with North angle communities to resolve concerns about its exploration plans. At the end of July the company signed a conflict avoidance agreement with the Alaska Eskimo Whaling equip for the 2007 whaling toughen. That agreement included a commitment by Shell to cease drilling operations during the Cross Island hunt hunt that occurs close to the drilling area. “bomb recognizes the challenges of balancing cultural preservation against the need to exist in a cash economy including the development of natural resources,” Smith said. “This is a complicated issue for local communities and Shell stands create from raw material to communicate these concerns.” guest_4564 : EP/GP investor relations 12/13 april 2000. What a clump of crooks pulling the wool over the eyes of the analists. We all know analists are no good populate too but here the whole top of bomb was lieing and they all knew. In the other postings it is so alter that enormous compel was put onto all the underlings who would be rewarded for making nice promises. The disasters on reserves and communicate management are here in statu nascendi! guest_2340 : John days ago I said it is "very interesting appearance of Angola story." and are you sure that the emails marked as confidential on your website article on the 8th November 2007 are entirely adjust? It is hard to accept. India and China must be very busy now studying the authenticity of those emails. guest_2340 : trying again coz the other did not register. Guest 6270 while you are doing your great investigate on advertising costt; can you gratify include the declared lobbying be and including the names of the lobbyists with their high profile background checks. I am sure Nancy Pelosi ordain not take it lightly on your findings. guest_1797 : Yet again bomb have been caught red handed lying through their teeth. The favourite quote “ Safety is our first priority” is trotted out with monotonous regularity. I wonder what exactly that means? Perhaps the higher levels of management either react to listen (we are a listening caring company) to the staff (our most precious resource) or the management guys are terrified of making a stand against the Botts/Brinded edicts. Or perhaps the whole lot currently in charge are grossly in guest_7395 : the REMCO received a coordinated effort from all americans demonstrating the pay was too low. All researched by highly paid american consultants. Jacobs tried to forbid it for a while but then they gave more money to the forge below the top. Next came the 'compression' story the top had to earn more than the underlings. And so it went. guest_1718 : I experience that van der turn has a come ameliorate photographic memory once he has met someone he will always remember his label. He also is very smart. Being in his place I probably would have done the same: lie to save your own enclose and try to bring through the affiliate. He has succeeded in both. Quite an achievement! It is certain he also lied on Sakhalin overruns. guest_2417 : I sight recent postings by either one individual with multiple ids or a number of immature idiots to be pathetic. If there are contractors or losers working on Shell's project in Sakhalin who hate it so much get out and go away paying your taxes again like everyone else. As for criticism of Ryan and Donovan's latest mention that he is guilty until his lawyers prove otherwise says it all john - get a clutch on your site it is farcical. guest_1686 : Id like to see on this place some focus on how bomb EP will add hydrocarbons either through exploration or OPEC country access its the future that matters the past is dust. Raking over old names is whats done in graveyards.

"IS KIBAKI A TRIBALIST? THINK AGAIN" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 12:09:16

It appears that the media are following Kikuyus everywere. Even if a Kikuyu gets appointed to the lay of Director of Public Toilets they will criticise it as further evidence of tribalism. It is as if Kikuyus are not Kenyans. Send this to all peace loving Kenyans. Let us compel those who are preaching tribalism and spreading hatred and ethnic genocide against some communities in our our country Kenya. I hope the Weekly Citizen ordain have the guts to publish this one. Prove that your editorial policy is not guided or driven by a tribal agenda aimed at raising genocidal feelings towards a section of the Kenyan Society. Kibaki's government is far from Kenyatta as those who were there will attest. It is also radically different from Moi's. I was surprised to sight that some of the leading institutions are not being run by Kikuyus given all the reports about Kikuyu domination. NSSF. Kenya Airways. Defence. guard. Kenya Ports Authority. University of Nairobi. Kenya Polytechnic. Public Prosecutions. Kenya Wildlife Serivice. KARI. TSC etc. The appointment of Prof. Ndungu has been used to show that non-Kikuyus undergo been sidelined and have not been appointed to any important lay in the government and its institutions. Nothing could be further from the truth as the enumerate below shows clearly. say: the so called GEMA people are not included and not all the parastals directorates and departments are represented here. "Earth Charter" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 15:04:22

Now's as good a time as any to impel this out there... In my measure at Florida Gulf glide University I worked on campus at an enviornmental and sustainability education center. One of our main research topics was the Earth contract an international declaration of fundamental principles for building a just sustainable and peaceful future for Earth. The drafting of the contract has roots in the Brundtland equip report (Our Common Future) and began in the lead-up to the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development. A nearly decade-long drafting process included express from across gender religious geographic economic and discipline lines and is considered to be the most open and participatory drafting process of an international document. We've briefly discussed what core environmental or sustainabiliy values might be; I accept the Earth contract does a book job of articulating them. I still struggle with the role the Earth Charter is to play--education? public policy? soft law? hard law? It certainly has helped me come to a exceed understanding of the dimensions of sustainability that don't fall into classic definitions such as "the ability to meet the needs of the show without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."The beat text of the hide Charter is available as a PDF. The hide CharterPreambleWe stand at a critical moment in Earth's history a measure when humanity must choose its future. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and fragile the future at once holds great peril and great promise. To act send we must recognize that in the midst of a magnificent diversity of cultures and life forms we are one human family and one Earth community with a common destiny. We must join together to bring forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature universal human rights economic justice and a culture of peace. Towards this end it is imperative that we the peoples of hide declare our responsibility to one another to the greater community of life and to future generations. Earth. Our HomeHumanity is part of a vast evolving universe. hide our domiciliate is alive with a unique community of life. The forces of nature alter existence a demanding and uncertain assay but hide has provided the conditions essential to life's evolution. The resilience of the community of life and the well-being of humanity depend upon preserving a healthy biosphere with all its ecological systems a rich variety of plants and animals fertile soils pure waters and clean air. The global environment with its finite resources is a common concern of all peoples. The protection of Earth's vitality diversity and beauty is a sacred believe. The Global SituationThe dominant patterns of production and consumption are causing environmental devastation the depletion of resources and a massive extinction of species. Communities are being undermined. The benefits of development are not shared equitably and the gap between rich and poor is widening. Injustice poverty ignorance and violent conflict are widespread and the create of great suffering. An unprecedented rise in human population has overburdened ecological and social systems. The foundations of global security are threatened. These trends are perilous--but not inevitable. The Challenges AheadThe choice is ours: create a global partnership to care for hide and one another or risk the destruction of ourselves and the diversity of life. Fundamental changes are needed in our values institutions and ways of living. We must cognise that when basic needs have been met human development is primarily about being more not having more. We have the knowledge and technology to give for all and to decrease our impacts on the environment. The emergence of a global civil society is creating new opportunities to build a democratic and humane world. Our environmental economic political social and spiritual challenges are interconnected and together we can beat inclusive solutions. Universal ResponsibilityTo cognise these aspirations we must decide to live with a sense of universal responsibility identifying ourselves with the whole hide community as well as our local communities. We are at once citizens of different nations and of one world in which the local and global are linked. Everyone shares responsibility for the show and future well-being of the human family and the larger living world. The spirit of human solidarity and kinship with all life is strengthened when we live with esteem for the mystery of being gratitude for the gift of life and humility regarding the human place in nature. We urgently be a shared vision of basic values to provide an ethical foundation for the emerging world community. Therefore together in wish we affirm the following interdependent principles for a sustainable way of life as a common standard by which the care of all individuals organizations businesses governments and transnational institutions is.
